Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Treatment

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy develops when diabetes damages nerves, most commonly in the feet and legs. Some patients also experience symptoms in the hands or other areas.

Peripheral Neuropathy And Neuritis Treatment

Peripheral neuropathy refers to damage or dysfunction involving nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Neuritis refers to irritation or inflammation affecting a nerve.
Symptoms may be widespread or limited to a specific area. Patients may experience burning, aching, stabbing, tingling, numbness, weakness, or sensitivity along the affected nerves.

Treatment options may include:

  • Medication management
  • Targeted peripheral nerve blocks
  • Targeted nerve ablation in selected cases
  • Peripheral nerve stimulation evaluation
  • Spinal cord stimulation evaluation

A targeted nerve block may help determine whether a specific peripheral nerve is contributing to the pain while also providing temporary relief.

When symptoms remain persistent, nerve ablation or neuromodulation may be considered in selected cases based on the location of the pain, prior treatment response, and overall diagnosis.

Cluneal Neuralgia Treatment

The cluneal nerves provide sensation to areas of the lower back, upper buttock, and pelvic region. Irritation or entrapment of these nerves may cause cluneal neuralgia.
Patients may experience localized burning, stabbing, aching, or electric-like pain near the top of the buttock or along the back of the pelvis. Symptoms may worsen with sitting, standing, walking, bending, or pressure over the affected area.

Treatment options may include:

  • Cluneal nerve blocks
  • Cluneal radiofrequency ablation in selected cases
  • Cluneal peripheral nerve stimulation

A cluneal nerve block may be used to help determine whether one of these nerves is contributing to the pain. When a diagnostic block provides meaningful temporary relief, radiofrequency ablation may be considered in selected cases.

Peripheral nerve stimulation may also be evaluated for persistent cluneal nerve pain that has not improved adequately with other treatment options.

Suprascapular, Genicular, And Other Focal Peripheral Neuralgia Treatment

Focal peripheral neuralgia occurs when pain is linked to a specific nerve. Depending on the affected nerve, symptoms may develop around the shoulder, knee, chest wall, pelvis, arm, leg, or another localized area.

Examples include:

  • Suprascapular neuralgia affecting the shoulder
  • Genicular nerve pain affecting the knee
  • Cluneal nerve pain affecting the lower back or buttock
  • Other localized peripheral nerve pain

Treatment options may include:

  • Targeted peripheral nerve blocks
  • Radiofrequency ablation in selected cases
  • Nalu peripheral nerve stimulation when appropriate

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Treatment

Complex regional pain syndrome, or CRPS, is a chronic pain condition that may develop after an injury, surgery, fracture, or other physical event. The pain is often more severe or prolonged than expected from the original injury.

CRPS commonly affects an arm, hand, leg, or foot. Symptoms may include:

  • Burning or severe pain
  • Increased sensitivity to touch
  • Swelling
  • Changes in skin color or temperature
  • Changes in sweating
  • Stiffness or reduced movement
  • Weakness
  • Changes in hair or nail growth
  • Pain that spreads beyond the original injury area

Treatment options may include:

  • Sympathetic nerve blocks
  • Medication management
  • Ketamine infusion evaluation
  • Lidocaine infusion evaluation
  • Spinal cord stimulation evaluation
  • Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation evaluation
  • Physical or occupational therapy coordination

Postherpetic neuralgia is persistent nerve pain that can remain after a shingles rash has healed. The condition develops when the shingles virus damages or irritates the affected nerves.
