How to Choose the Best Pain Management Doctor in Southern California

Interventional Pain Medicine

Living with persistent pain can affect work, sleep, movement, and everyday plans. Choosing a physician can feel especially difficult when symptoms have several possible causes or previous care has not provided enough improvement.

The best pain management doctor in Southern California is not simply the physician with the longest treatment list. A strong fit depends on training, diagnostic approach, experience with your condition, available treatment options, communication, and how well the care plan matches your goals.

Use the following criteria to compare pain management physicians and prepare for an initial consultation.

Pain management doctor explaining a spinal condition to a patient

Verify the Physician’s License and Board Certification

Start with credentials you can check independently.

California patients can use the Medical Board of California license lookup to review physician licensure and available public information. ABMS Certification Matters can also be used to verify certification through an American Board of Medical Specialties member board.

For pain care, look at more than the physician’s general medical background. Pain-specific board certification, fellowship training, and relevant experience can be especially important when procedures, diagnostic blocks, or implantable therapies are being considered.

Dr. Travis Martin is dual board-certified in Pain Medicine and Emergency Medicine and completed Harvard Medical School-affiliated interventional pain fellowship training through Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Our pain management specialist page provides additional information about his training and clinical background.

Credentials are not the only factor in choosing a doctor, but they provide a useful starting point.

Match the Doctor’s Experience to Your Type of Pain

Pain is not a single diagnosis.

Low back pain may involve a disc, joint, nerve, muscle, sacroiliac joint, or another structure. Burning pain in the feet creates a different diagnostic question from knee pain following an injury. Headache, facial pain, neuropathy, complex regional pain syndrome, and post-surgical pain may each require different approaches.

Review whether the practice evaluates your general category of symptoms.

Our pain conditions information includes spine, joint, nerve, neuropathic, post-surgical, post-traumatic, headache, facial, and musculoskeletal pain.

The website is still only a starting point.

Ask how the physician evaluates problems like yours and whether additional imaging, testing, or another specialist’s input may be appropriate.

A responsible pain physician should also recognize when a problem requires surgical, neurological, rehabilitation, primary care, or urgent medical evaluation instead.

Look for a Diagnosis-First Approach

A treatment should not be selected simply because a clinic offers it.

The evaluation comes first.

A pain assessment may include discussion of:

  • where the pain begins
  • whether it travels
  • when it occurs
  • what makes it better or worse
  • numbness or weakness
  • previous injuries or surgery
  • medications
  • prior procedures
  • available imaging
  • functional limitations

The physical examination should then focus on findings that are relevant to the suspected source of pain.

Not every patient receives a definite answer during the first appointment. Some conditions require additional records, imaging, a diagnostic procedure, or another clinician’s input.

The physician should be able to explain the working diagnosis, what remains uncertain, and why the next step is being recommended.

Be cautious about a major procedure being selected before the history, examination, and relevant records have been considered.

Compare the Full Range of Treatment Options

Pain management can involve more than medication or injections alone.

Depending on the diagnosis, an individualized plan may include activity modification, coordination with rehabilitation, medication management, image-guided injections, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, regenerative options, neuromodulation, or referral for another type of care.

A broad range of pain treatment options can provide flexibility when building a treatment plan.

But a longer service list does not automatically mean better care.

Ask why a particular treatment is being considered and what it is intended to accomplish.

The goal might be to help clarify a pain source, support function, allow greater participation in rehabilitation, or form one part of an ongoing treatment plan.

The expected purpose, limitations, alternatives, and follow-up should be clear.

Ask How Image Guidance and Diagnostic Procedures Are Used

Certain pain procedures may use fluoroscopy or ultrasound to help guide treatment toward the intended structure.

Ask whether image guidance is appropriate for the procedure being proposed and how it supports planning or placement.

Some procedures may also provide diagnostic information.

For example, a targeted block may help assess whether a particular nerve or joint contributes to the pain before a longer-lasting treatment is considered.

A temporary response can provide useful information, but it does not guarantee the result of another procedure.

Your physician should explain whether a procedure is intended to be diagnostic, therapeutic, or both, what response you should track, and when follow-up will occur.

Evaluate How Advanced Treatments Are Presented

Advanced treatment does not automatically mean appropriate treatment.

Some patients may be evaluated for spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation, ReActiv8® restorative neurostimulation, or another implantable therapy. These treatments are confirmed within the practice’s scope, but they are not appropriate for every patient.

Our neuromodulation and implantable pain therapies are considered based on the individual diagnosis, prior care, goals, and candidacy.

Ask how candidacy is determined, what a temporary trial may show, what it cannot predict, and how the device would be monitored if treatment proceeds.

Similar caution applies to platelet-rich plasma and other regenerative options.

Ask about candidacy, available evidence, realistic goals, alternatives, and follow-up.

Avoid promises of tissue regrowth, permanent relief, guaranteed success, or guaranteed avoidance of surgery. These outcomes are not supported as universal expectations.

Focus on Function, Not a Guaranteed Pain Score

A pain treatment plan should not promise complete pain elimination.

It is often more useful to connect treatment goals to the things pain prevents you from doing.

Depending on the patient, those goals might include:

  • sleeping more consistently
  • participating more fully in therapy
  • walking farther
  • completing daily activities more comfortably
  • returning to appropriate work activities
  • improving tolerance for movement

Ask how progress will be measured and when the treatment plan will be reassessed.

Follow-up may consider changes in function, medication tolerance, response to a procedure, new findings, or whether the original goals remain realistic.

If a treatment does not provide meaningful benefit, the next discussion may involve adjusting, stopping, or replacing that part of the plan.

Consider Communication and Care Coordination

Pain can cross several areas of medicine.

A pain specialist may need to review records or coordinate with a primary care physician, surgeon, neurologist, rehabilitation provider, or another clinician whose input affects treatment.

Notice whether the physician explains uncertainty rather than pretending every answer is obvious.

You should understand:

  • the suspected pain source
  • the proposed plan
  • reasonable alternatives
  • important risks and limitations
  • what to monitor
  • when follow-up occurs
  • which symptoms require additional attention

Ask who handles questions after a procedure, how records are shared, and which clinician is responsible for each part of care.

Good coordination can reduce confusion when several providers are involved.

Confirm Location, Referral, and Insurance Requirements

Practical access matters when pain care requires follow-up or several stages of evaluation and treatment.

Prestige Pain & Trauma Institute currently serves patients through locations in Loma Linda, Rosemead, and Palm Springs.

Ask which services are available at the location you are considering and whether a particular procedure occurs there or at another facility.

Insurance networks, referral requirements, and authorizations can also change.

Before scheduling, verify:

  • whether your plan currently participates
  • whether a referral is required
  • whether prior authorization may be needed
  • which medical records should be sent
  • whether existing imaging should be brought or transferred

Our new patient evaluation information can help patients prepare for the first visit.

Relevant records may include identification, insurance information, a current medication list, prior imaging and reports, and records from previous procedures or surgeries.

Use the First Visit to Decide Whether the Practice Fits

An initial appointment is an evaluation, not an automatic commitment to a procedure.

Use the visit to see how the physician reasons through your case.

Consider asking:

  1. What are the most likely sources of my pain?
  2. Is additional testing needed?
  3. Would another specialist’s input be helpful?
  4. What treatment paths are reasonable for this diagnosis?
  5. Why are you recommending this option now?
  6. What benefits, limitations, and risks should I understand?
  7. How will we measure whether treatment is helping?
  8. What happens if the first plan does not provide enough benefit?

The answers should reflect your history and findings rather than sounding like the same treatment plan given to every patient.

If the diagnosis remains unclear, the recommendation does not fit your goals, or you feel pressured toward treatment you do not understand, seeking another opinion can be reasonable.

Choose Specialized Care Based on Clinical Fit

Choosing the best pain management doctor in Southern California means looking for verified credentials, experience relevant to your condition, careful diagnosis, appropriate treatment options, realistic expectations, and communication you can understand.

At Prestige Pain & Trauma Institute, we provide diagnosis-driven pain management for patients in Loma Linda, Rosemead, Palm Springs, and surrounding areas. Our confirmed scope includes pain evaluations, medication management, image-guided procedures, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, regenerative medicine, neuromodulation, and treatment for a range of complex pain conditions.

The right treatment still depends on the individual patient, diagnosis, health history, prior care, and clinical findings.

If you are looking for an individualized evaluation, request an appointment to discuss your symptoms, relevant records, and possible next steps.

Elizabeth Mercier Dr. Travis was great. He told me what was happening and after pain meds were in, I should feel any pain. And if I did let him know and he would give me more pain med. All I felt after numbing injection was presure and in let me know I would feel that, but it was normal. It's a quick procedure and so far so good. The staff were very professional and helpful. Great team! I'm looking forward to feeling better for a bit.
